April Ross
April Ross is one of just a handful of female beach volleyball players to win medals at many Olympics. She is set to compete in Tokyo for her 3rd Olympic gold medal along with Alix Klineman, a first-time Olympian. More than that though Ross will be aiming for the first Olympic gold. At 39, this could be her last chance to do so. She remains optimistic that she will be able to win top awards. If we do our top or perform well, I think we'll win the gold medal Ross stated on NBC Boston. Additionally, I'm going put my faith in a touch of luck. Ross was a Californian born in Costa Mesa, California in 1982. She lived here with her mother, father and sister. Ross went on to play in many activities at Newport Harbor High School. She played basketball and ran track, in addition to her volleyball skills in the indoors as a prep athlete. In her final game, she clearly stood out. In her time at high school, she played middle blocker, outside setter and hitter at the tennis court per her college bio. As a tribute to her efforts she was awarded the Gatorade Award for the National Player of 1999. The 2000 Orange County Athlete of the Month award was also won by her due to her volleyball skills. Ross and Klineman are continuing to play since 2017. But, Ross played a significant role in the world of beach volleyball before the pairing. The American has been a major winner in competitions with different players. The other is an icon of the world of volleyball. Between 2007 and 2013 she was in a partnership with Jennifer Kessy, who is currently her coach. Ross, the teammate of Kessy's, who took home the title of world champion together with Kessy in 2009 was also significant on the international stage. They took home a Silver medal in the 2012 Olympic Games held in London. They were beaten out for the gold by the legendary team comprising Misty and Kerri Walsh (Jennings). As fate would have it Ross turned out to be Walsh Jennings' new partner when May-Treanor retired. They went on to compete for the bronze beach volleyball trophy at Rio Olympics 2016 with Walsh Jennings. Ross played for the Trojans at USC during her college years after she graduated in high school. And her run at USC was an impressive one. In her first year at the school, 2000 earned her the Pac-10 and NCAA Freshman's of award and become an All-American. The Trojans were also able to get to the Final Four with her help. The Trojans suffered a significant personal loss in her sophomore, yet was capable of achieving the All-American award. Over the course of her final two seasons she led the Trojans to the top of the mountain and won consecutive national titles. The achievements of each individual have established her status as a legend in volleyball. She was awarded the Honda Sports Award 2003-04 for the top female NCAA player. Ross studied at USC in International Relations. Margie Ross did not get to see her daughter's rise to beach volleyball fame. Ross lost her mother to breast cancer in 2001. Ross was then a sophomore. She is devoted to her parents who passed away. Margie has inspired her throughout her life, as well as on the beaches.
