Whitney Elizabeth Houston was the youngest child of the singer Dionne Warswick as well as gospel music legend Cissy Houston. Whitney Elizabeth Houston grew as a child in a household of musicians. In Newark, Whitney began singing with the choir of the church in the early years of her childhood. At the age 15 she accompanied her mother the background vocals for Chaka's smash Im Every Woman from 1978. In 1981, she briefly was a model and also appeared on the Seventeen cover. She also performed backing vocals to Lou Rawls and Jermaine. Her first gig was as a lead vocalist with the New York-based funk band Material and it was the high quality of her work as a vocalist with them that attracted the attention of the major record labels, including Arista with whom she signed in 1983, and with whom she stayed for the rest of her career. Whitney, her album Whitney, released in 1987, and featuring the hit tracks Where Do Broken Hearts go? and I Wanna Dance With Somebody, built upon her previous success. However it came with The Bodyguard (1996) that made her one of music's best sellers. The movie and her role in it was not appreciated, but the soundtrack and her rendition of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You were charting for months on the charts and she sold over 44 million singles and albums worldwide. The same year, she got married to Bobby Brown who was a previous New Edition singer. She had their sole daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown. They were married in the month of March, 1993.
